The Jim Rome Show

Jim Rome

In the realm of guerilla sports talk Jim Rome is King Kong. Swatting away the ill-informed and ignorant like little toy biplanes and employing his unique, razor-sharp vocabulary to chew up pompous sports prima donnas like balsawood scenery.

Jim generates an electric atmosphere on the air that's dense with attitude, humor, and hipness. Rather than gunning for controversy and confrontation, Jim aims to engage and challenge his callers.

His creative, bare knuckle approach, tempered by intelligence and vast knowledge of sports, has left him perched atop the sports talk world with America's sports radio fans in the palm of his hand.

Vick Says All Of The Right Things:

Michael Vick’s interview on 60 Minutes went about as well as it could have gone for him. Now, that’s not to say that I totally buy what he’s selling. Especially that line about how football doesn’t even matter. C’mon, Mike…really? What’s next, that you’d play the game for free?
Look, I don’t know him well enough to know whether or not the con is still on. And I’m guessing that if you hated him for being a dog killer before, you probably still hate him for it right now. That said, “Team Vick” had to be thrilled with his performance. He was well prepped, stayed on message and, didn’t do anything to make it any worse. He may have even helped himself some. And the best thing he did was own it outright. Trying to spin it, explain it, or rationalize it in anyway would have been disastrous. But he didn’t do that. He admitted he should have stepped in and shut down the entire operation, but didn’t man up and do it.   He also copped to the con he was running as a player…admitting he was the last one in the building, first one out, didn’t respect his gifts and was lazy.

The Weekend In Sports:
You had to know Tiger Woods would get nailed at the wire of a Major one day. He couldn’t go his entire career without someone running him down from behind. I just assumed it would be Paddy Harrington, Phil Mickelson, Vijay Singh or maybe Sergio Garcia. I didn’t expect it to be Y.E. Yang, whoever that is.

Major Reaction: David Feherty, CBS Sports & Golf Magazine analyst, breaks down the matchup between Y.E. Yang and Tiger Woods over the weekend!

Huge ups to American sprinter Tyson Gay who set an American record in the 100 meters at the world championships in Rome. And, still got smoked by Usain Bolt! Gay ran a 9.71 and he wasn’t even in the picture when Bolt hit the tape. That’s what happens when you actually run through it, eh…U. Then again, it probably does get boring, being that fast. You probably do have to invent ways to keep yourself interested! Like celebrating wins at the 20 meter mark!

Which brings me to David Ortiz! ‘Big Papi’ lashed out at the media saying everyone’s coming for him because negativity sells. And he wants to know why he doesn’t get the benefit of the doubt considering he’s always done it the right way. Fact is, Papi, no one gets the benefit of the doubt anymore. That went out the window when you guys started cheating and lying about it!

Sportsmanship is in right now. Etiquette and class are cool. That’ll happen when a global icon decries he’s too competitive to shake the winner’s hand and walks right off the floor after a loss…I like it. That said, we might be getting too much of a good thing with College Football’s newly proposed handshake initiative.

A Big Bluff:

49ers’ top draft pick Michael Crabtree reportedly is threatening to sit out the entire ‘09 season so he can re-enter the draft in 2010. Sure he is! No one is that foolish. Especially, given his reasoning!
Crabtree’s cousin and adviser David Wells says, “Michael just wants fair market value.” Right! And if they’re offering a little less than the guy has taken right before you…and a little more than the guy has taken right after you…that’s exactly what you’re getting…fair market value. It’s called slotting. You don’t want fair market value…you want to be paid based on where you think you should have gotten. You think you’re better than Darrius Heyward-Bey who went three picks higher to the Raiders. So you want more money than him. Eehhhhh! Wrong answer…

Explanation:
King LeBron has finally gotten around to addressing Dunk-Gate. And his blowing off the Magic and the media after Orlando did the Cavs in the playoffs. He addressed it, but didn’t own it. Regarding the dunk, he told the National Assn. of Black Journalists Sports Taskforce: “I never told anyone to confiscate any tapes. Nike has no videotape policy at pick up games. They’ve always done that. Now that LeBron is involved, it’s blown up.” You didn’t really just invoke the royal third person did you?!

V-Y Hall of Fame Bound?!

I would have fallen out of my chair when Vince Young said he’s going to be the next black quarterback to win the Super Bowl.  And that he was going to the Hall of Fame! If, that was the first time I had heard it, but it wasn’t.  His college coach Mack Brown said virtually the same thing on my radio program Monday. When I pushed him on it and said really, Mack…Super Bowl and Hall of Fame…he didn’t hedge at all!

We know Phil Jackson’s not long for the Lakers’ gig. Not at his age, not with his health, and not if he was angling to show up for just half the games. And now we know, Jackson’s guy, Kurt Rambis, is not the cat in waiting. Not if he went as hard as he did for the Sacramento job. And not if he’s on the verge of getting the Minnesota job!  No way that guy would be interviewing that hard if he thought he had any shot at the Lakers’ job.  He’d just wait. Good luck in ‘Minny’, “Rambo”!  When you get there, make sure they know Ricky Rubio isn’t the next “Pete Maravich”, but rather a skinny, flashy point who will make a play or two in transition, but never a shot!
( Read more of this take, go to: JimRome.com)
Matt Leinart is reportedly in a battle to keep his job, but not with Kurt Warner…potential hall of famer. Instead, with Brian St. Pierre…“journeyman”! I’m not going to be one of those guys who piles on and says you’re a bust, ‘Matty’. Unless, you can’t beat out Brian St. Pierre…and then I will!

T.O. Tweets About Jim:

Well, lookie’ here! Look who’s unhappy about yesterday’s T.O. take. T.O.! He didn’t care much for me pointing out that his reality show was ranked 798th last week among all cable showsand couldn’t beat a 5 am rerun of the Fresh Prince. So he rapped me via Twitter saying the only reason I took a run at his show, was because he won’t do my show: “FYI: Jim Rome talks bad about me b/c I wn’t do his show!! LMPO!! Let him keep talking, still wn’t do it, we’ll c whn I hv season 2!!” But he was just getting started!

Now Chargers’ cornerback Antonio Cromartie is known for two things. Making the sickest pick of the 21st century…that’s just not right! And he just became the first NFL’er to get fined by his team for “tweeting”!

While a number of teams have gone out of their way to say they want nothing to do with Michael Vick, the Green Bay Packers are not one of them. When GM Ted Thompson was asked about Vick, he went with the proverbial, “we’re always looking to improve our team. We look at all options at all times. I wouldn’t care to speculate in terms of the odds or the percentages (of signing Vick) or anything like that…we look at everything.”

Tuesday in the Jungle:

Proving once again a Twitter account is like a loaded gun for celebrities and athletes…Ocho Cinco tweeted about Plaxico Burress’ loaded gun: “Twitter family please pray for my dude Plaxico Burress, indicted on all counts after injuring himself, huh, grand jury my (expletive).” Then he threatened to block anyone who hated on Plax’, saying, “…straight up, he made a f-ing mistake.” Child please! That’s your take?!
Cut the guy some slack? He just a made a mistake?! Right!
Possessing an unlicensed handgun, outside the home or business and having it go off, in a state with some of the toughest gun laws in the country, is a huge mistake! It’s also a crime. So now he has to do the time.

Florida has just made Urban Meyer the highest paid coach in the SEC. That is, at least until Alabama finishes reworking Nick Saban’s deal. Urb’ is going to pull a cool $24-mill’ over six years. Sure, it’s absurd! And at this point…just funny money. Especially, amidst the layoffs and budget cuts in his program and everyone else’s!

The Rome Report: The T.O. Show

Terrell Owens has met his match! He is getting locked up and shut down. But not in practice….in the Neilson’s! T.O. may still be a top 10 receiver, but his reality show barely broke the top 800. For real!
